Most Prep schools have at least one drama studio, plus a theatre. Drama has a direct impact on a child’s public speaking and performance skills and helps develop self-confidence, therefore, in most Prep schools, drama is taught as a stand alone subject with a specialist drama teacher. In most state primary schools it is incorporated into the English curriculum and is taught by the regular classteacher. At its best, all children will be involved in at least one major production each year and will be able to sit LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) examinations.
All schools will teach music, although the provision for instrument learning will vary. In general, children in Prep schools will be exposed to double the amount of music than those in state primary schools. In some schools, all children will learn a musical instrument as part of the curriculum at no extra cost. This is not the case in most schools; it is more common place for the child to come out of class for a private music lesson where they can work through their ABRSM (Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music) grades. If music is your priority, look for schools that have a wide range of ensembles and orchestras, as well as opportunities to perform regularly.
Many Prep schools showcase fabulous artwork which is often displayed around the school. Look out for schools that offer free flow- unlocked art studios that students can use in their free time, time spent with Resident Artists, as well as their success in achieving art scholarships for senior schools.
